On this Saturday, the third Saturday in June, I want to wish an especially happy Father’s Day to my father who I am happy to say is the best father in the world publically for the whole world to see. Thanks Dad… 24 great years together and so much to go.

I’m quite sure he is not only the most loving and supportive Dad in the world but also the best mentor and friend. I know, and have always known, my Dad would give me the shirt off his back just to make my life just a little easier. If everyone on the planet were so lucky as I am to have a Dad like him, we would live in a much better place.

On the same note… my best wishes also go out to the two best Grandpa’s in the world, Grandpa Dick and Papa. I cannot even imagine how much different my life would be if it were not for these two amazing people. Both are very much what aspire to be once I put on a few more years of experience.

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY TO ALL THREE!! Love, Dan

Hopefully someone will find this description in Google in order to avoid the problems I had setting up Small Business Server 2003 to properly use SMTP email.

We started out using the POP3 connector for our email after installing SBS but that has its own hassels (such as setting up users) that convinced me to switch to full-blown SMTP. Here is the step-by-step of what to do to switch to SMTP. I am blogging this because I couldn’t find it anywhere on the web in a one stop shop… hope it helps.

1. Configure your firewall - You must open port 25 on your firewall to all internet traffic and direct it to the local IP of your Small Business Server.

2. Set up a custom DNS A record with your web host, usually mail.yourdomain.com, that points to your SBS network’s public IP address.

3. Set up a custom DNS MX record with your web host company that points to the A record you just set up… this record usually should say 10 mail.yourdomain.com

4. Call your ISP and tell them to setup a reverse lookup on your public IP address that is the custom A record (mail.yourdomain.com). If you don’t do this, many email addresses will deny email from your server as part of their SPAM prevention efforts.

5. Setup a place to catch backup email in case your server is down. I would recommend checking out MailHop at www.dyndns.org.

6. Setup a second custom MX record with your web host that points to the backup email in case the first attempt fails. Should most likely be 20 mail.yourdomain.com.

With that, you should be “un-POP’ed” and fully operational on SMTP email. Hope that helped some lost SBSers as it would have helped me.

Painting Pixels

General Comments Off

This guy is amazing… This is the most amazing painting I have ever seen done without a paintbrush (on a computer). Yes, a painting (with full tutorial on how the guy did it) done with nothing but Adobe Photoshop and a mouse. Super cool. Click “Read More” to read the tutorial, a link to the final image is below.

Great story for today…

According to Stephen Hawking, the survival of the human race depends on our ability to find new homes elsewhere in the universe because there’s an increasing risk that a disaster will destroy the Earth.

So, I suppose we all need decide what is better… death or living on Mars, in case the situation arises.

I am going to start posting one article per day (on days I don’t forget) here about cool stuff I see going on in the world. I’ve decided I want to do my part to help spread the word on things of interest to me ;-).

And with that, my next article is one from the world of biology… South Korean scientists claim to have created a “cellular fountain of youth.” It is claimed that the newly-synthesized molecule, named CGK733, can even make cells younger. Check ou the article if you find this interesting. Who knows, I may be in my 24th year of like 500 years of life!
